Generic Name:
Ofloxacin – a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family that inhibits the enzyme DNA gyrase, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication.
Dosage Form:
Intravenous injection solution. Each vial contains 200 mg of Ofloxacin in an appropriate volume for slow intravenous administration.

Indications (Uses)
- Treatment of acute and chronic respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis)
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis, cystitis, and recurrent infections)
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis
- Treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- May be used for certain sexually transmitted infections (under the supervision of a physician)
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: The usual dose is 200 mg every 12 hours, administered as a slow intravenous infusion over at least 30 minutes.
- Duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of infection (typically 5–10 days).
- In patients with renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (due to placental and breast milk transfer)
- Children and adolescents under 18 years (because of possible effects on cartilage and bone development)
Warnings and Precautions
- Risk of tendon rupture, especially in elderly patients or those using corticosteroids
- Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizziness or drowsiness occurs
- Avoid exposure to sunlight or UV lamps due to photosensitivity
- Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or central nervous system disorders
Common Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Neurological: dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, headache
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching, urticaria (hives)
- Liver effects: elevated liver enzymes or hepatic dysfunction
Drug Interactions
- Antacids, iron, magnesium, and zinc supplements: reduce absorption of Ofloxacin
- Warfarin: increased risk of bleeding (monitor INR closely)
- Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine): may increase neurological side effects
- QT-prolonging drugs: increased risk of cardiac arrhythmia
